Pros

  • Minimal advertising
  • Lightweight
  • Quick and smooth, even on slower devices
  • Allows downloads and background play

Cons

  • No saved history
  • Not officially supported by YouTube
  • Missing some YouTube features

NewPipe is a super lightweight way to watch YouTube on your Android device. It is an alternative client for people who do not want the heavy version of YouTube pushed by Google but also want to retain features and have a better user experience than running strictly in the browser. The NewPipe client does not use any APIs or frameworks for YouTube but instead alters the way the website appears in the app to be more mobile-friendly. This allows for NewPipe to be lightweight and feature-rich since it is essentially just a dedicated way of viewing a webpage.

What Makes NewPipe Unique?

Because NewPipe does not use the YouTube APIs, it comes with unique features and some caveats. YouTube stopped allowing people to download or cache videos several years ago, but NewPipe still allows you to do that. Another feature that Google removed from YouTube a few years ago was the ability to just listen to the video with your screen off. NewPipe also tends to have fewer ads than the official YouTube app. However, NewPipe has brought that feature back to Android. While offering these services, NewPipe lacks the ability to save your history reliably and make recommendations off of it, whereas the official app does not appear to have that problem.

Pros and Cons

Due to it not using YouTube APIs, NewPipe is able to offer certain features the stock app does not but comes with some restrictions not present with the official YouTube app. Here is a shortlist of them:

Pros

  • Minimal advertising
  • Lightweight
  • Quick and smooth, even on slower devices
  • Allows downloads and background play

Cons

  • No saved history
  • Not officially supported by YouTube
  • Missing some YouTube features
